on topic of making music again, only got a crap microphone 2 play round with at the moment, anyone know of a prog that can interpolate/smooth/filter as im getting a lot of crackling.. or even something with some voice effects?
well there's lots of restoration type programs and vocal specific programs (pitch correction, vocoding, etcetera). i don't know nothin about microphones really, but what are you plugged into? is the mic a condenser (does it need phantom power)?
well, i'm not sure about the crackling, it occurs to me if it's really a constant crackle you're getting, it may not be the mic, but actually the buffer settings of the program you're using to record. if there's not enough buffer happening in your recorder you'll get a crackling for sure. the other possible cause may be your input levels are too high and it's simply clipping the top of the signal causing a bit of a crunchy sound.
but if it's more of a popping thats happening occasionally, its more likely that you need to set up some kind of 'pop screen'. i'm sure you've seen photos or video of people singing and there's a kind of filter in front of the mic? that's to prevent bursts of air (usually P's and B's) from hitting the mic and causing it to pop.
if you want a decent recording, you have to get a half-decent dedicated audio card. you can get a decent mic for like a hundred bucks and if you dont have a mixer with preamps on it, you can get a mini preamp to amplify it for like 80-100 bucks.
yeah or once you get an audio interface, you can get one with a mic preamp built in to save a little bit a cash.
