I love Nanci Griffith, and one of the most beautiful simple love songs of all time is her "Little Love Affairs"

When I wake in the night
and I think I'm still dreaming
you're the first thought in mind
and love's a fair-weathered friend
when you're lonely --
you are my summer state of mind

Does it sing to you nightly?
Does it lay down beside you?
Does it make you hear songs
on the radio?
It once was a shadow, grown weary of travel
'till you gave it hope...

and what makes the love grow,
when the seasons change?
what makes the love grow?
it's simple,
it comes, and it grows on its own

But does it sing to you nightly?
does it lay down beside you?
does it make you hear songs
on the radio?
it once was a shadow, grown weary of travel
'till you gave it hope

when your dumb ass figures out how to make a song that's so
simple and yet so hauntingly beautiful (and you have to hear it to really
get what I'm saying) you can tell me that folk music sucks...

... from what little of his stuff I've heard. His voice, on the other hand, has only improved with age (I can actually listen to Things Have Changed from the Wonderboys soundtrack without cringing).

I first heard Dylan on We Are the World, the biggest selling coaster of all time. It was weird. I'm listening along, trying to pick out the voices that I recognize, and all of the sudden I hear:

It's twuuuuuuuuuuue we mahk a better deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey just yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew and meeee.
... and wonder, "Who let the drunk into the studio?" I was absolutely appalled to find out that this was the celebrated Bob Dylan. He's improved a bit since then, but I've only found that out accidentally from channel flipping on the radio, not from actual research. His lyrics are pretty interesting, though.

I'm also fond of some work from Heather Alexander (http://www.heatherlands.com) and Ashley McIssac. It seems like upbeat Celtic (rock) is pretty much guaranteed to get my attention, if not my admiration. However, I'm pretty baffled by people who worship Joni Mitchell and other popular folk artists. Meaningful lyrics only go so far if the music itself isn't something I feel can support them.

OK...that's it! I give up...either I change my default from Dark EQ, or I stop reading Byrdie's posts, 'cause I just can't keep straining my eyes trying to make out those tiny purple letters.

For you, and quite a few others, she rocks. She's a music legend for some reason. However, what little I've heard of her music sets my teeth on edge. :dunno:
