You want an honest opinion on the male/female thing?
I don't know any women who can appreciate or care to follow any music that isn't 100% mainstream. I know there's quite a few out there, like all the beauties here on the forum...but you're a rare breed, to be able to feel music this deep...
:slap: for myself ahead of time.

and by the way...I guarantee that in pm's prime, early 90's...they had millions more female fans than male.

i feel as if some women may not buy music for musical reasons.......sometimes they buy for the guy's image......Of course I have known women who buy music like ani di franco and jewel's older albums cause they can relate to the message.........people dont care about message as they do about image and what looks good.

I'm glad you slapped yourself, but I'm not sure it's enough...
First of all, there isn't as much non-mainstream music by women as there is by men...that's because in the good old USA we STILL place a disporportionate value on women for their looks...it's ok for male musicians to be but-ass ugly as long as they have a good sound, but how many ugly female artists can you name? So female artists who may have fresh, original sounds never get anywhere at all if they aren't at least pretty...
So there isn't enough femlae representation in non-mainstream music, and frankly, it gets tiresome to only listen to the male perspective...I'm into modern music for the lyrics, primarily, because if I want to hear good MUSIC I can listen to classical or jazz...but good, modern music has a blend of descent music with poetic lyrics which I enjoy, and sometimes I get sick of men bitching about women, and their ex girlfriends, or getting some, or whatever...and frankly, you can only listen to Ani so often...
The music industry is still very male dominated, and it's not about whether or not women "get" music that deeply...scientifically, women are far more adept at words and their usage than men, and frankly are better equipped to (scientifically speaking) "get" lyrics more deeply...the problem is that more often than not, men's lyrics don't always do it for us, and there is a severe underepresentation of the female perspective...
To believe that most women are incapable of appreciating non-mainstream music is unbelieveably sexist..maybe the problem is that men still haven't figured out a way to make most women interested, and the women who could get other women into it are still bullied out of the field by the chauvinistic pricks running the show...

First of all...this is what always happens to me when I debate with a woman...every little character of every word gets analyzed to a point that I didn't intend to make...I get very missunderstood and look like and ass...nothing new, anyway....
First of all, there isn't as much non-mainstream music by women as there is by men...that's because in the good old USA we STILL place a disporportionate value on women for their looks...it's ok for male musicians to be but-a$$ ugly as long as they have a good sound, but how many ugly female artists can you name? So female artists who may have fresh, original sounds never get anywhere at all if they aren't at least pretty...
Okay...a very good point, and I don't understand that myself...why should looks only be the main selling point for female artists? dunno...but if there were more talented female artists that can't make it mainstream...wouldn't there be more non-mainstream?
So there isn't enough femlae representation in non-mainstream music, and frankly, it gets tiresome to only listen to the male perspective...
To be frank and reiterate what I said earlier in more detail...and because I don't have time to explain myself in detail with the time I have...
Almost every girl/woman I know latches on to what's popular THAT was my intended point....to me it has nothing to do with lyrics, (check out the instrumental group 'Blue States' and you'll have an example) or nothing to do with the quality of the music...
I have no intentions of being sexist by stating this, but its merely what I've observed and continue to see everyday.
...scientifically, women are far more adept at words and their usage than men, and frankly are better equipped to (scientifically speaking) "get" lyrics more deeply...
No shit! I know 12 programming languages and can barely speak english.
Point in case...when I spoke of the depth of music...I meant the depth of the music itself...not the lyrics...
To believe that most women are incapable of appreciating non-mainstream music is unbelieveably sexist..maybe the problem is that men still haven't figured out a way to make most women interested
Whoops...another bad vocabulary slip...I didn't mean to say that they cant' appreciate it...just in my experience, most chose not to.
and the women who could get other women into it are still bullied out of the field by the chauvinistic pricks running the show...
AGREED!!!
I love ya mistresss...you're very passionate and strong-willed...

I think you need to start hanging out with a different bunch of chicks, then, because none of the chicks I know listen to mainstream music...it's all about the kind of people you like to surround yourself with...like if you only hang out with 3-piece suit kind of people, then you might start thinking you're the only non-conformist in the world, know what I'm saying? this post is officially HIJACKED
My opinion on this entire "male dominated forum" is:
for one Mistress you cant be like other ladies. The majority that I know, and even most I don't are more wrapped up into meaningless and material things which mean relatively nothing all because it is MAINSTREAM. I'm not being a PIG, just stating my feelings. Wherever these women are that you say appreciate meaningful lyrics are located lemme know.
my opinion on why this is mostly guys is:
because this forum is filled with men like myself, trying to figure out what in the hell is going on in that love of their life's mind. Trying to figure out what they did wrong, and just really trying to make sense of their situation before they frustrate themselves and go mad. PM Dawn's music relates to these situations..."being ignored when you put your heart on the line", "sitting and wondering if you frigged up and how", or just plain out maybe because their songs are sang outwardly to help cope with a situation in their lives that was a heartache.
Again ive run this music past over 100 different women, all ages and all different areas...which not one of them have had anything positive to say about the thoughfulness or depth of this well versed music.
flame me if you must...but in a MALE dominated forum, where we have what seems like just you saying we are wrong, and all of us saying women just dont get it (in our experiences)...you must be one of those select few.
good day.

Mike,
First welcome to the Forum.
I think its very stereotypical of you to say that, whether you've run into a lot of women or not.
Just because you personally think women don't get it, doesn't mean they don't! It just means not all women devulge their interest & investment in music. Stating that most women like mainstream is just plain wrong. Your making a judgement call you have no right to make. I run into hundreds of men & women & wouldn't dare to make such a statement. I run with a band who does a lot of touring around the area & people can always surprise you.
Women usually do get things on different levels than men do. Thats what makes men & women different. I will go far as to state for the women on the forum we Definatly consider oursevles excepts & share many of the same passions for the music the guys do here.
Whether this be a MALE dominated forum or not....it isn't about gender, its about respecting the people here.......& for the most part we take that rule to heart........
So as we all do I respect your opinon on the subject, I just beg to differ on it :)

...scientifically, women are far more adept at words and their usage than men, and frankly are better equipped to (scientifically speaking) "get" lyrics more deeply...

personally i don't think this has anything to do with gender, my understanding is that people in general gravitate towards what is mainstream (duh).

Heheheheheh...I may be a fool, but here goes! :umm:
Women are more emotional than men. They therefore tend to be drawn much more to emotional lyrical content than men are...not nescessarily deep, but emotional. They are also much more likely to form an emotional attachment to the artist whose lyrics have touched them.
I have know women whose mood and attitude would often change and would even sometimes be dictated by hearing this or that song at a certain time, or they would be upset about some guy and a song about a similar situation would come on and they would swear that it was fate, and the song was telling them inside information or something!
Men are more likely to be drawn to musical and instrumental content than women. They are therefore much more likely to be drawn to artists whose strengths go in that direction. Men are also more adventurous, so you would find them searching out content that is more daring and out of the ordinary.
Here's a for instance: I LOVE Pat Metheny, my wife really likes him...great instrumental content, very rare lyrical. We both LOVE Steely Dan...a superb mixture of both. My wife LOVES Sting, I really like him...great instrumental content, but definitely lyrically centered.
Now how this pertains to mainstream and such I will NOT venture to say (I ain't THAT stupid)! I think it goes a long way in explaining how at least in Black Music the men lean more towards rap than the women, while the women will lean more towards R&B. However, I find that the lyrical substance in ALL music nowadays is so weak that it probably renders it all moot anyway.
As for PM Dawn though, I think the adventurous factor kicks in. Whereas both lyrical and instrumental content I think tend to be equally superb in their music, Be does like to make his lyrics a good bit harder to follow. He likes to make the listener work at getting to his point. I think that most women look for a more instant satisfaction in thier search for emotional content.
Now mind you, that is not what makes Be's lyrics deep, just more poetic...the deepness is in the content, not the form...so that is no validation of the "gurls don't like deep music" argument. Women just tend to want to "get it" right away.
My 2 cents anyway... :)
