DAMN PLACE!
1) For Be:
I am a big fan of melody in songwriting -- PM Dawn has incredible lyrics, but it's the melody and production that put it over the top, into hero-status for me. And with samples, on top of that!
So, if permissions were not an issue at all, what sample would you use? For instance, your use of "Sweet Home Alabama" was incredible -- you took the sample and created an entirely new melody ... but you couldn't legally release it because of Skynard's issues. So what samples are your top, unattainable canvases just waiting to be written over ... but will never be?
2) For Us:
OK, so for most of us, a live PM Dawn is an unexperienced thing -- recorded or performed. And for the rest of you (besides "FUCK YOU, YOU LUCKY BASTARDS), you don't really get to pick your songs. So, what Cover and what PM Dawn song would you like to hear live. And yes, I know the Covers thing was discussed a year or two ago -- but now, it's ANY cover -- regardless of genre.
-----------------------------------------------------------
My answer to 2, since unfortunately Be hasn't asked me to be part of PM Dawn as a back-up acoustic guitar player (I could be Wino the Mockturnal?!). Anyway, a stripped down version of Apathy ... Superstar? would be my dream as far as PM Dawn songs. Piano, drums, acoustic guitar, and a stellar Be performance would eliminate the lurker in me forever. For the harder part of me, Plastic -- no doubt, boo, no doubt.
As for covers, I'm completely impressed by the few covers I've heard PMDAWN do -- I don't think anyone could do "1999" better -- I steal it and play it acoustically like that, too. Or "Norwegian Wood" ... Chr*st, that was incredible. The "No Woman, No Cry" tease from Be's post only embittered me more, out of immediate-gratification-frustration!. So, besides that one, if I could pick any cover that I would like PM Dawn to interpret?:
Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" -- Be has a knack for going outside of boundaries, and I think he could do this folky acoustic song justice. It's the kind of amazing eternal motha-fucking lyric that Be would write, it's a great melody ... and it is just waiting to be resurfaced. It speaks of clouds, of love, of life -- how PM Dawn is that?!! If anyone other guy sang "Soncheynne" acoustic, they'd sound incredibly emasculated. But Be pulls it off! So, I know he could pull off a cover of this incredible song better than Neil Diamond or Judy Collins did.
I mean, look at this shit: incredible:
Tears and fears and feeling proud,
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds,
I've looked at life that way.
Oh but now old friends they're acting strange,
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day.
So there it is -- 2 questions, one for Be and one for us.
Let's keep the love of this forum going. It's incredible, and I'm sick of hearing shit otherwise!
