DAMN PLACE!

1) For Be:

I am a big fan of melody in songwriting -- PM Dawn has incredible lyrics, but it's the melody and production that put it over the top, into hero-status for me. And with samples, on top of that!

So, if permissions were not an issue at all, what sample would you use? For instance, your use of "Sweet Home Alabama" was incredible -- you took the sample and created an entirely new melody ... but you couldn't legally release it because of Skynard's issues. So what samples are your top, unattainable canvases just waiting to be written over ... but will never be?

2) For Us:

OK, so for most of us, a live PM Dawn is an unexperienced thing -- recorded or performed. And for the rest of you (besides "FUCK YOU, YOU LUCKY BASTARDS), you don't really get to pick your songs. So, what Cover and what PM Dawn song would you like to hear live. And yes, I know the Covers thing was discussed a year or two ago -- but now, it's ANY cover -- regardless of genre.

-----------------------------------------------------------

My answer to 2, since unfortunately Be hasn't asked me to be part of PM Dawn as a back-up acoustic guitar player (I could be Wino the Mockturnal?!). Anyway, a stripped down version of Apathy ... Superstar? would be my dream as far as PM Dawn songs. Piano, drums, acoustic guitar, and a stellar Be performance would eliminate the lurker in me forever. For the harder part of me, Plastic -- no doubt, boo, no doubt.

As for covers, I'm completely impressed by the few covers I've heard PMDAWN do -- I don't think anyone could do "1999" better -- I steal it and play it acoustically like that, too. Or "Norwegian Wood" ... Chr*st, that was incredible. The "No Woman, No Cry" tease from Be's post only embittered me more, out of immediate-gratification-frustration!. So, besides that one, if I could pick any cover that I would like PM Dawn to interpret?:

Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" -- Be has a knack for going outside of boundaries, and I think he could do this folky acoustic song justice. It's the kind of amazing eternal motha-fucking lyric that Be would write, it's a great melody ... and it is just waiting to be resurfaced. It speaks of clouds, of love, of life -- how PM Dawn is that?!! If anyone other guy sang "Soncheynne" acoustic, they'd sound incredibly emasculated. But Be pulls it off! So, I know he could pull off a cover of this incredible song better than Neil Diamond or Judy Collins did.

I mean, look at this shit: incredible:

Tears and fears and feeling proud,
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds,
I've looked at life that way.

Oh but now old friends they're acting strange,
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day.

So there it is -- 2 questions, one for Be and one for us.

Let's keep the love of this forum going. It's incredible, and I'm sick of hearing shit otherwise!

As far as ampling goes......I WOULD REALLY LOVE THEM TO SAMPLE "THESE EYES" BY the guess who.

Not the lyrics just the melody and harmony in the background. Would make a wonderful song..a rap group recently used the sample and they made a wonderful choice but the the dang drum beats was all wrong.

I'll go for a damn weird wacky James Taylor song for the cover song i'd like to see done by P.M. Dawn. "One Man Parade" It's ripe for some P.M. Dawn action. (wait that sounds somewhat pornish)

The tune i'd love to hear live is Sonchyenne. It's just a damn nice tune. Good post you freakin Wino!!!

Awesome question... So hard to pick a specific song, but I would love to hear "I Hate Myself For You" live... It has a simplistic charm that kicks me in the ass.

As for covers... let's see... I'd say Talking Heads, but that's been done already. I was loving the RHCP cover when it was up on the website. OK, let's see... I think a Beck cover would be awesome... maybe something from Sea Change. Paper Tiger might work. Might be too mellow though.

Actually...that wasn't even a sample...they just duplicated the riff on guitar...same issue though -- copied a song without recreating it in its entirety...no love from Skynrd... :slap:

Be mentioned wanting to use a sample of "Starfish and Coffee" by Prince one time...luv that jam. That or off the same cd, "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" had a beat way ahead of its time.

The Joni Mitchell song has already been covered beautifully be Jason Falkner, which counts it out for me.

I think Stevie Wonder's "Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away" would be magnificent. It's already a beautiful song, but if anybody were to be put up to the test, I would turn to P.M. Dawn.

As far as live versions go, I imagine "Screaming At Me" or a throw-back to "My Own Personal Gravity" would capture the room. Or any of the following, really:

"A Watcher's Point of View"
"Plastic"
"I'd Die Without You"
"My Own Personal Gravity"
"Forever Damaged"

I'm still kicking myself (hard) for missing the show at Shine in New York a few years ago. I forgot to check the news!!

well i guess as kind of a ritual for EVERY album...i write a song using SUPERWOMAN by stevie wonder  i actually wrote most of set adrift to it..then after spandau ballet came into effect i rewrote some of it...also Superwoman was the canvas for..misery in utetro..and when midnite sighs...and revolvers (JSS)..... eventually..i think i'll use it...but i really hate the people at motown/jobete
