View Full Version : Hate to Admitt it...but it's true

Hey I got this idea for a topic when I read some of the posts on disco music. I was just wondering if there is any type of music, band, or song that you may really like but you hate to admitt it. I for one can say not everything I listen to is well received by most people. So if anyone is willing to admitt it, go ahead and share :) :) I'll start...ok...I'm gonna be real, I am a fan of the MONKEES...there I said it (I love the bass in Pleasant Valley Sunday   ). And if I reach even deeper, there was a time in my high school years where...whew can't believe I'm going to admit this...but New Kids on the Block was my world!!! :lolbonk: :lolbonk: :tinker: Ok I have embarrassed myself enough for board amusement...anyone else willing to open up

Oh, New Kids on the Block was the bomb.
I can't believe I'm doing this. Umm, umm, umm... :ohnoes:
I'll give only a few admissions...let's just keep in mind that I was very young and MTV was new and stuff so I was all amazed with videos (cuz we also just got cable) and so...here goes:
Ratt: "Round and Round"
Cinderella: "Nobody's Fool"
Poison: almost anything from them.
Motley Crue: "Smoking in the Boys Room" (why was I singing this song in like 4th grade?)
Raamstein: "Du Hast" (man, I can sing this song in German [and English] complete with accents)
And the one that takes the cake:
Ms. Roxanne Shante: :ohnoes9: Can't remember the name of the song but part of it goes.
"Then you know what else happened.
I went to Marley cuz we was a close friend.
I said, I want to make a record, yes.
He said, come to my house and let me see if you're fresh.
I said no not that way, no not today...he said, you know I'm just playing Shante'."
Ok, I've aired my dirt.
i listen to filthy dirty nasty House songs...the nastier the better..like "Break for Love",,,oh and .."you used to hold me...you used to love me...you used to thrill me"oh..and my all time personal favorite..."You Keep me Cummin on"....extended PLUNG ME!!!!!! mix...invented by our very own Cozmo D
oh yeah gyrl...don't be embarrassed about Shante'...by the way i think that sone you're talking about is "Queen of Rox".;..boy ohhhhh boy....there was i time when i couldn't start my day without some rhymes from shante'
or the monkeeez ...for that matter

I'm sure owning a copy of THE JETS was bad. I don't recall listening to it or what in the hell they sang but i somehow bought it! I really enjoy the Monkee's. I love lots of oldies tho and the Monkee's had their share of pretty solid tunes.(both those written for them and those they wrote.--Love Michael Nesmith!)
Oh wait...Debbie Gibson would have to be waaaay the hell up there! Album Out of the Blue. Lord how gay am i? JETS and Debbie Gibson?
Lastly everyone needs to see the movie made by the Monkee's. It's called HEAD. I love it.

Hmm, I personally dig most of the music mentioned.
I'd first like to thank everyone for being so honest in their posts. Y'all really make me feel so much better. I think I need to air my dirt more often. It's so liberating. :bigthumb:
I'm also glad to see I'm not alone with the Roxanne Shante. Thanks for that, 'Be'. I thought I was taking that one to the grave. :)
Anyways, I tend to enjoy jingles for commercials and TV tunes and those can be really bad (especially the ones I like). For example, umm, children's shows...like the learning ones that I'm way too old to be watching without owning or having any children of my own...such as "Zoobalee Zoo". Man, it has the best song to it! Also, the 'Good N Plenty' candy commercial from way back in the early 80's. I feel as if I'm the ONLY person in the world that remembers that song. It's the best jingle ever.
Let's not forget "The Great Space Coaster". Oh Yeah!

Good one, Chuk. I can still jam to Milli Vanilli.
Oh, one more...Crucial Conflict "Hay".
"Haaaay, in the middle of the barn...(smoking on) hay
(haaaaaaaaay) in the middle of the barn. "
Sadly, I know all the words and find myself singing it from time to time in the office. :dunno:

ok ok back to the spirit of the thread...
i hate to admit it....but it's true
and speaking of true...that was the only song i ever heard from spandau Ballet until i was 26...and now...it's the only song i can stomache.....they fuckin suck...except for that one song...
Now for me...THATs some real shit to admit....

True is the only song from Spandau Ballet that I knew as well. It wasn't until I got Grand Theft Auto Vice City that I heard another song by them "Gold", not the best music to play when you carjacking someone or takin' out a crime boss. :dunno: Actually "Will I Am" and Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas did a remake of True. It's on the "50 first dates" Soundtrack (recommended for those who like contemporary artists re-doing cheesy 80's songs)...of course it cannot compare to the original...doesn't even have the "bought a ticket to the wor-or-orld, but now I've come back again" part.
And Milli Vanilli...Blame it on the rain....  I also have an album by this band from the late 80's "When in Rome"...whoa...hate to admit it but it's true, still pull it out on long roadtrips (when I'm riding alone of course)
And SCB, you not only sing Crucial Conflict around the office, you sing it around your friends too, they just love you too much to mention it. :slap: *lol*

That would be a pretty sweet cover. Only who would you pay? The band you're covering or those they originally "covered"?
as for what I will admit I listen to? I have every single Enya CD (When I hear that track from Jay-Z all I hear is Enya in the background. I don't listen to the rest of the song) and most Yanni CD's. Admitedly I listen to the Yanni ones as background music at work because I don't have to concentrate on it, but I still like them.

Kid is doing "Showtime At The Apollo". Last time I talked to him he had decided not to even bother rapping anymore and to do stand-up comedy instead. I have no idea about Play...I heard he was trying to do movies.

Hahah, dude, that's exactly how I feel about Seal. I just finished playing his first album for my girlfriend yesterday... then I had to explain that she shouldn't really bother with the other ones.
Embarassing artists... how about El DeBarge? I loved "Rhythm of the Night" when I was a kid... but then something changed and I hid the tape away somewhere. I don't think I've listened to it since.
Or... I'm not embarassed about this, but people always look at me strangely when they are going through my CD's and find the stack of every CD that "Weird Al" Yankovic has ever released, including the box set. Luckily they don't usually browse my video tape collection, where they would find every one of Al's major TV appearances, including every episode of the "Weird Al Show". :tinker:

Let's go back to the early 80's with a secret favorite of mine (it had to be a secret because I was only like 8 years old...so they were no no).
Vanity 6 "Nasty Girl"
"Tonight living in a fantasy...our own little nasty world.
Tonight don't you wanna come with me, do you think I'm a nasty girl..."
And then Vanity's "Pretty Mess"
"...He makes such a pretty mess on my dress...Ooooh!
Such a pretty mess."
And I know we all loved the Spice Girls:
"Yo, I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want.
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want...
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna really, really, really
wanna zigazig ahhh!!"
Ok, there...I said it.
There is no reason for this madness. :banghead:

Yeah, maybe I'm being too harsh on the second one. Well, I keep buying his albums on the day they are released... in the hopes that he'll get his ass in gear and come out with something good again. His last two albums are averaging between one and two good tracks per CD... not great.
By the way: The "Killer" extended single with "Hey Joe" and "Come See What Love Has Done" is pretty awesome. Give it a listen sometime if you can find a copy.

Suddenly I'm on top of the world

Flying away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me

Breaking me out of the spell I was in
Making all of my wishes come true

Now, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum,
What might be right for you, may not be right for some.
A man is born, he's a man of means.
Then along come two, they got nothing but their jeans.
But they got, Diff'rent Strokes.
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes.
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world.
Everybody's got a special kind of story
Everybody finds a way to shine,
It don't matter that you got not alot
So what,
They'll have theirs, and you'll have yours, and I'll have mine.
And together we'll be fine....
Because it takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world.
Yes it does.
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world

Ok, I don't really have a group or song that I'm not willing to admit that I like or listen to. But if you want to talk about things that will get me weird looks or, "you're kidding right" are:
Color Me Bad
Jars of Clay
Charles and Eddie
Oasis
Rod Stewart
George Michael
Supreme Beings of Leisure
Wham
Def Leopard
Monkeys

hmmm I think that statement would be a better title for this post, because not everything we have listed is actually bad or shameful, just not what the masses tend to listen to or think is normal or good. I mean even my favorite band '311' probably belongs in here. I love them to death but there lyrics are really out there and random at best, but I love listening to them and the music makes me feel good. Just being a black female that doesn't really listen to a lot of hip hop and R&B period garners many "you're kidding right?" remarks for me.

I definitely remember that one fondly. Curse it all.

Each of these artists have at least a couple of songs that I cave into. argh.

I don't know if this even counts as a song. I joked with my wife this would be our first dance song....the guy was Paul Hardcastle and the "song" was Nineteen. You know it. The one which talked about Nam. I haven't heard the damn thing in years!
I'm much more fond of Rainforest, which -- perhaps deservedly -- got much less radio play.

"Simply irresistable." and that really bad song....
"She drives me crazy" fyc. I quit listening to music for 2 years after that incident, I was all  until I found peace
Please laugh with me, not at me.........
I admit to an odd fondness for Robert Palmer. I even like his cover of "The System's" In My System.
Thankfully, I can admit that my interest in the Fine Young Cannibals wasn't completely hormone driven: I adored Good Thing long before I laid eyes on *sigh* Roland Gift. (Thanks to that man, Sammy and Rosie Get Laid is one of my favorite films. whoo.)
Really, I'm laughing with you. There's no alternative.

Billy Ocean-Suddenly
All I can really remember about Billy Ocean's music is that he was my first real experiment with the "pitch" dial on my parents stereo. I never did quite get him to sound like Aretha Frankin, but it wasn't for lack of trying.
There's more, but this is getting long.

we cant forget TACOS electrifying cover of "puttin on the ritz"
Okay, that one I'm not ashamed of loving!

99 red balloons anybody....:)
A song that suffered from serious overplaying, but I actually found myself being able to sing part of the German version without knowing a lick of German. The same with Falco's Der Kommisar.

I like Seal's 2nd album...almost as much as the 1st. :dunno:
Actually, I think that the second album is the main reason that I like Seal.

No one captured teenage love better than New Edition.
*sigh*
My outright favorite New Edition song is If It Isn't Love.

Mathew Wilder "Aint nothin gonna break my stride"
I don't understand why I like that song. It has so many potentially annoying components to it, but everytime I hear it I end up bouncing around and enjoying myself.
Wrong ... wrong on so many levels.

Two Words... I Think...
Milli Vanilli... I think
I watched a where-are-they-now special on them recently and was sad to find out that Rob had died. They certainly weren't the most profound experience of my life, but it was a pity that he couldn't find some way to make out well afterwards.

Oh and I love Inxs, I have the greatest hits album and can you believe it doesn't have "Not Enough Time" on it...WTF
I'm quite fond of Michael Hutchence's cover of Jim Morrison's The Passenger. "Batman Returns" wasn't a great movie, but I love the soundtrack.

And then Vanity's "Pretty Mess"

Such a pretty mess."
I bought both albums. And the Appolonia 6 album. I even remember Animals from Vanity's solo attempt. yeek. And to continue a theme ...
<!--QuoteBegin-Be@Jun 11 2004, 05:25 PM
i listen to filthy dirty nasty House songs...the nastier the better..like "Break for Love",,,oh and .."you used to hold me...you used to love me...you used to thrill me"oh..and my all time personal favorite..."You Keep me Cummin on"....extended PLUNG ME!!!!!! mix...invented by our very own Cozmo D
Thus far, I can think of three examples of music I like that leave me checking to see
if if it can be heard through my headphones:
Type O Negative (http://www.typeonegative.net/) - particularly, Be My Druidess
VNV Nation (http://www.vnvnation.com/) - specifically Cold, the Rated R Mix by Mig-29
Peaches (http://launch.yahoo.com/artist/default.asp?artistID=1097201) - seems to be pretty much any random song she does
And, my all-time shameful admission is Right Back to Where We Started by Maxine Nightingale, voted by someone the single worst disco song of the 70's. I never quite grew out of liking this song, though I admit that I don't indulge too often. I fear my brain would melt.

Very, very retentively.

I wouldn't have thought that there was any shame in liking CeCe's Finally until I re-watched "The Aventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert". I think I'd blanked the trauma of what song was playing. aigh, the visuals from that one particular performace! :bash:
