It was apparently a self-inflicted gunshot wound. (http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=518062)

I know that this sounds very immature, but as far as I'm concerned Hunter S. Thompson was one of those people -- like Ray Charles and Jaccob Lawrence -- who wasn't supposed to die.

rip......................

Yeah, my buddy was real torn up about it, so I know that we really lost somebody even though I am unfamiliar with his work and life...

Johnny Depp played him in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120669/).

Bill Murray portrayed him in Where the Buffalo Roam (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081748/).

Doonesbury's Uncle Duke (http://www.doonesbury.com/strip/thecast/duke.html) was based on him, and he was Warren Ellis' inspiration for the character of Spider Jeruselum from Transmetropolitan (http://www.transmetropolitan.com/gimme.html).

Fuck. He iced himself? Well, rest in peace Mr. Thompson, I highly enjoyed your writings, but fuck you for doing that.
