It's funny how, upon someone's death, you find out what they did in life. I didn't know until the day of his death that James Doohan was a WWII veteran; he landed at Normandy on D-Day with the Royal Canadian Army. A machine gun found him and he got shot to hell, taking four in the leg, one that took off his finger, and one in the chest that may have killed him, but was stopped cold by a silver cigarette case he kept in his pocket.
What I did know was that, after Star Trek was cancelled, he didn't sulk and whine about being typecasted, as many actors do; instead, he embraced his Scotty character and the fans of the show. From what I hear, his friendliness to fans made him a favorite at conventions.
It saddens me that it was complications of Alzheimer's that did him in, because two of my grandparents died with that disease. However, he lead a long, full life, and left something on this earth that says, "I was here!"
The Star Trek "live long and prosper" thing sounds corny, but this guy did just that.
