Has anybody tried it out yet? Everybody's saying it has a lot of stolen stuff from the mac, and that's what i thought when i first saw it. I was going to get my 10 dollar copy through the university just to test it out, but I read that you should have 750mb-1gb ram. I only have 512 on my laptop and 600something on my desktop :(

EDIT: okay, so i guess it was just released yesterday...

I just found out that all of our campus computers are supposed to be running it by 2008, so it better not suck.

you will need at least 1gig of ram to get the glass windows and pretty things for vista.
to check if your machine is vista ready

I'll wait until they get the bugs worked out of it--sometime next year hopefully.

At a minimum SP1, most likely SP2. Then it may be stable enough to use for a couple of years or more.

At a minimum SP1, most likely SP2...

That's exactly what I was gonna suggest.

I'm waiting for when I can get a decently priced mid "top-of-the-line" computer that can handle the processing/graphical/power needs.

If you need that much horsepower just to run an operating system, then what the heck do you need it for?

At a minimum SP1, most likely SP2. Then it may be stable enough to use for a couple of years or more.

Just remember the rule: Odd service packs are almost always better than even service packs.

The reason: SP1 primarily fixes bugs that existed in the product when it was released, thus making things more stable. SP2 primarily introduces features that they wished the product had when it was released, maintaining their competitive advantage but introducing more places for things to go wrong. SP3 primarily fixes bugs introduced in SP2. SP4 adds more new features. SP5 fixes bugs in SP4, etc.

The lesson: Be afraid of even numbered service packs. ;)

And here in lies the problem: It should only take ONE service pack to "fix" the darn thing!

I guess you get the joke better if you're a Mac user.

Just watched mac ads... I ain't no mac user myself, but that shit was funny! Loved the security one...

P.S. I agree with PsychoMan... I'm a head programmer and I'm making sure our software's not Vista compliant until SP1 at least...

Or better still it shouldn't be broken to begin with!

I doubt I will adopt vista for a long time but I may set it up on a different partition just to give it a go. I tried one of the earlier pre releases and there didn't seem to be much of an advantage except for it looking prettier aand being more gimmicky.

Won't be trying it for a while yet anyways, I had the nerve to plug a printer into my pc the other day and the motherbord promptly died and now i have a nice crusty southbridge chip and my laptop psu is at my mothers house so im using my wifes laptop which is a 400mhz celeron but I have to admit it's managing to run xp ok which is a miracle, i don't think it meets the minimum requirements for vista sadly....

I just got the internet connection set up again after moving house and there is only one working computer so im not looking forward to her coming home later, she'll have to pry the laptop out of my cold dead hands.

I have 3 pc's and my laptop psu all at my mothers house hours and hours away, I had a spare pc but I just donated the ram to a friend and it was old sdram so i have nothing to replace it with, I knew I should have taken them with me the last time I visited!

hehe lemme get a screenshot of my wifes system........

It helps me stay in touch with my feminine side!
