Ladies and Gentlemen,

It was with a heavy heart today that I said goodbye to my Street Fighter II arcade machine. Incredibly, I got my asking price and managed to sell it locally (in a town with about 2000 people!?!?!?) without having to transport this heavy beast.

Attached to this post are some pictures of this lovely unit. I sold it so I could afford (and have the room for) a drum kit. Things you do...

:D

Right on. I'm currently restoring a Tempest machine!

That doesn't look like a refurb A.Dulteror. Did you paint over or remove the side graphics? Was that a transplant?

Good God almighty, DJ! I'd love to have a Tempest machine...so would my Dad.

I understand they have issues with the control knob and that they're hard to replace/find replacements. I've read some people using different style knobs, but there's just something about the feel of the original with it's "feedback".

It is a transplant to an old cabinet that was fixed up. The header board I did myself in Photoshop, and the moves chart is the original. The game board also had the original manual with it... couple of collector's bits... shame to see it go.

There are a LOT of issues with this game, but I've done Ridiculous amounts of homework ... I'll post pics when it's finished

Yeah, I've heard of problems with the flashy buttons Atari used, also. But still, ya gotta have them for that "classic" look.

DJ Detroit Butcher

None of that even rates tho... it's the fact that Tempest was the first Color Vector arcade game and Atari hadn't really figured out Color Vector Monitors yet ... They are basically time bombs and will always die, no matter what, which is why a working model is worth so much on ebay, etc ... Fortunately it's literally about 15 dollars for the repair kit for this particular monitor...

Bonkman
06-22-2007, 01:33 PM
A guy I used to know once said something about the repair kit you mentioned. He also said that was the most frightening part of arcade machine repair, messing with the tube. Lot of charge built up in those...even after 10 years sitting around unplugged.

Weren't the original tubes Atari used in Tempest an oddball size? 30+ inch screen or something?

DJ Detroit Butcher
06-24-2007, 05:46 PM
Not sure, but they are mounted vertically and are an odd oval shape. Lucky for me, this monitor only recently blew (it looks like it's already been restored once at least) ... and it came with all the original paperwork and shit, and I don't have to touch the tube, it's all parts on a mini mobo. I don't have a camera right now but I'll try to get some pics of my unit up soon...

I have the tempest 2000 soundtrack if that's what you're looking for (from atari jaguar).

I was gonna say...the original Tempest had no music, just sound effects.

Brian has what I believe you're looking for.

Aren't we talking about the game with a joy-stick that you manipulate your ship around the edge of an odd shaped tube-is thing, firing down at all of the other bugs/ships/robots/whatever climbing toward you? That is what I was thinking about. And back in the 80's I thought it had cool, fast music... or maybe I have the wrong game... I really used to play a lot of Galaga!

Brian, is Tempest 2000 from the early 80's? Maybe that is it. I would love to hear it again.

What was the game that featured a huge skeleton's head? You had to take your ship and shoot asteroids to find crystals to kill it. As it collected crystals, it built itself into a big thing and then chased you... What was it? Was there ever a PC version or hack? I liked that one, as well. It was tough (at least for me and my quarters).

It looked like this

It used a spinner tho, not a joystick - very difficult with a joystick!

I still have my SNES (hooked up in the daughter's room...she likes to play with MarioPaint) so I only use sne9x when I want to play a game I might not have.

The emulator: Mame32

The game:
http://www.niceapron.com/images/sinistar.zip

Install mame32, then put the sinistar.zip file in the roms directory.
I've got about 1300 different arcade games on file that run on Mame32 - let me know if you need any more.

I recommend getting a old xbox ebay 50$ to 70$ some around 40$

There is a software mod installer now. use it flash the xbox
Will need to rent halo2 and 007 and a memory stick. and get some files from your pc to the stick.
I have all stations roms and play them more than any xbox game.
Well worth the money

I've got MAME roms also...tho, not quite as many as Brian.

I can't get to them right now, unfortunately.

The video card on my main system took a dump last night. Not enough money around to buy a decent one (all my money goes to pay the bills and I don't get an allowance). Don't have a spare card to throw in, either. Using my old computer in my daughter's room to get online. So, I'm just gonna sit and wait until the wife gets pissed that she can't use the computer and "authorizes" me to purchase a new card.

Yep I've got about as many as Brian, version .110, there's a torrent site that specialises in these if anyone's interested http://www.pleasuredome.org.uk/

info please...been out of the loop on that one.

DJ Detroit Butcher

Fukkin amazing, some people had waaay too much free time, and figured out how to emulate the score displays from Pinball Rom Dumps ... some other folks took it a step further and decided to emulate the machines themselves... Now, you're thinking, "But Pinball is a machine, not like an arcade game ..." So you download not only the dump of a given pinball rom, but a layout of the "board", give it an animated "ball", and bada bing!

google for pinmame, and visual pinmame, they go together. the pleasuredome site I mentioned above also carries the roms needed for these. Probably any pinball machine you could ever remember, is right there.

Problem solved!

Got an "early" birthday present from my mother-in-law (she rocks!). Picked up an eVGA GeForce 7600GS 256MB DDR2 card to replace the blitzed 6800GT I had. It definitely was the video card. Couldn't restart the old card without seeing funky lines at the post screen (had to shut down, wait 20 seconds, then power up). Now, all is a-okay!

So, to stay on topic:

Tempest ownz!
Sinistar rocks!
Anyone liked Gyrus?

Loved Gyrus, myself.

Pinball was what I started on, tho. I remember when I was staying with my grandmother over the summer and she had to go to the hair salon. The owner of the shop owned the bar next door and he had a mid 70's pinball in there ($.10 per play). I played the hell out of that thing.

My favorite pinballs were the late 80's/early 90's Williams pinballs.
