Are they saying that there are too many elephants in South Africa, so they may start culling them again???

I believe I heard on some news radio that the population has gotten high enough that they're going to allow controlled hunting. They also mentioned that the environmentalists and animal activists are coming out of the woodwork to protest the decision.

Didn't look further into it, though.

Culling is a way to cut down the population methodically. So they will be killing the elephants.

I suppose that is not too much different than what they did here in Florida for the alligator population. We protected them long enough to bounce back to a point where we issue hunting licenses every year now. BUT in a controlled manner - a limit on your catch and a limit on the number of licenses per season, so they predetermine the maximum amount of animals that will be (legally) killed that season.

So, I suppose they will determine the max number of elephants to kill each season and issue hunting permits...

Funny thing - Tampa's zoo has 4 elephants that were saved from S Africa's cullings in the past, but one is on loan to some other state's zoo for breeding. They ought to just get a fresh herd of a dozen directly from Africa instead of trying to breed them...

And what would you use as bait to catch a 'gator, house cats?Funny thing - when I saw a quick show on it, they did not use bait. They would get on a boat and cruise through the swamp at night with flashlights. They can determine the approximate size of a gator from the distance between the glowing eyes. Then they shoot them. Some guys use some sort of stick with a shooting device on the end... Not as exciting as you would think...
