i know we have a lot of music nerds around here, so i thought i might start a thread where we could recommend things we like to each other. rare music, weird music, mainstream music, whatever you like. i like many different kinds of music, but i'm sure some of you like things that i've never heard of, and vice versa.

post links to websites, vids, or artists and songtitles, whatever!

here is my contribution for today!

If you're looking for weird, I was manic this weekend so I was listening to Free Jazz (it's the only thing, when I'm up really high, that I can tolerate because it's so fast-paced and treble clef).

Check out some Albert Ayler here: http://www.amazon.com/Live-Greenwich-Village-Complete-Recordings/dp/B00000DD1S/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1210603163&sr=8-2

I listened to the Albert Ayler samples. That music is too abstract for me to follow. I bet it would sound much better to me during a thunderstorm. I'm gonna' save it on the computer and try it out.

def leppard-songs from the sparkle lounge.....their best album in 15 years.....has some bite to it....theres a ballad on there called "love" which sounds like they were listening to "a night at the opera" when they recorded it...their best ballad possibly since "heartbreak"

a song about all the hollywood fallout girls called "bad actress"

a killer opener called "go" and a good follow up called "nine lives"

a solid fairly strong album compared to the debacles that were "x" and "euphoria"

Madonna-hard candy

i really am liking this album.....reminds me of bedtime stories....

killer closer called "voices"

and a song with kanye "the beat goes on"

4 minutes i like but the best groover off the album to me was "give it to me"

gnarls barkley -the odd couple

for "whos gonna save my soul". "would be killa" and "whatever" alone is worth the price of admission

and the soundtrack to the psp game final fantasy 7 crisis core....adaptations of nobue uematsu s work.... and the best version of the nibleheim theme ive ever heard as well as a radical reworking of "one winged angel"

till next time...my balcony is closed....for renovations..... :D

Electric Light Orchestra - "Turn To Stone" from Out Of The Blue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Itv6Kt8M-v4
There's just something I love about the 70's music and the use of electronic synthesizers, electric guitars, piano, strings, horns, etc.

Faith No More - "Evidence" from King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFYU0m3617E
and "Stripsearch" from Album Of The Year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EN5P_wTLKc
Slightly (but not completely) unexpected and enjoyable tunes from a "hard rock" band. In fact, Faith No More was progressive rap-rock before any of these current-day upjumped bands even thought of the idea. See Epic from The Real Thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsETamxkT9E). Actually, I believe that these are two of the best songs they've ever recorded.

The System - "Don't Disturb This Groove" (Album Version) from Don't Disturb This Groove http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8jO2a_18JE
Now THIS is a synth-pop masterpiece from the 80's. Love this classic jam.

Tony Toni Toné /feat. DJ Quik - "Let's Get Down" from House of Music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7lXPlh7qHw
Now THIS is a funky jam from the 90's. Love this modern jam.

Information Society - "I Like The Way You Werk It" from the EP Oscillator http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ei9rFjRT5_A
Yes folks, they're still around. And the three original key members are back making the tunes.

Imprompt2 - "Enjoy Yourself" from You're Gonna Love It http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Impromp2.html (No YouTube vid, sorry)
Love these guys. Smooth jazz-funk-R&B-you name it. Mellow, but it can make you start tapping your foot and not even realize it. Great for cruisin' in the car or playin' in the background in the bedroom. Got lots of compliments on "music choice" when I played this for background dinner music when I used to DJ wedding receptions.

Faith No More was a very underrated/diverse band. In the scheme of things they didn't get the credit they deserved....much like PM Dawn. I always yell about them to people. (Pm Dawn that is) Got to let the mass public know they dropped the ball.

The Peeping Tom is another album which is pretty solid all the way through. One of the songs if i'm not mistaken has Norah Jones kind of rapping?

Duncan Sheik is great. I should pick up some of his music.

You really cannot go wrong with any of Duncan's albums. Here's how i would rank them in order of buying them....

Duncan Sheik(1996) -album with his hit and only hit Barely Breathing. The rest of the album is fantastic though.

Daylight-This album is one of the truly really great albums you enjoy all the way through. Each time i listen to it i always wonder why radio didn't pick up on this album? (then i remember....radio sucks these days)

Humming-His second album. It's got many wonderful tunes and is a little more acousticy than his first album which was ornate with strings and what-not. It's ranked three because the first album and Daylight are just that good.

White Limousine- His last album if you don't count the work from Spring Awakening. It's a mellow affair but great music. This is an album that potentially could move up my list but it hasnt soaked all the way in as of yet. The title track is my favorite off this one...

Phantom Moon- This is an album written lyrically by his friend Steven Sater. The music and voice is all Sheiks. It's still a very "Duncany" album and worthwhile to own, in fact, i have it in my mix at home as we speak. Another very mellow affair...has a lot in common with Humming. The music was made for a play called Phantom Moon.

Spring Awakening- I'd love to see the play as it seems quite good. THe music for the play was written by Duncan Sheik and the words i believe are once again Steven Sater. You can tell by how the kids phrase many of the songs that Duncan was the guide to them as they sound like songs he'd sing. I like this album but Duncan doesn't sing on any of these songs. (so in many cases it really isn't his album persay) Still, it's a worthwhile purchase....i'd just get it after eveything else....

Here's a good tune by DS... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2bS5-TllBY

Sorry for anyone who tried to listen earlier. It pasted an old link! :)

I didn't realize that Ambersunshower's CD is out. Remember the Runnin' Song produced by PM Dawn? I just downloaded the MP3s from the album. It's an interesting listen.

oh my god kristen. i had such a funny incident with this song. basically josh and i were beginning to argue one day and i just started speaking to him with only lines from this song and waited for him to notice. then we cracked up when he did. the end. i swear, it was funny. i am typing like this 'cause a baby is in my arms.
