View Full Version : The Boxxy Phenomenon

This girl who calls herself "Boxxy" is a bona fide internet phenomenon.
Her video has only been up on YouTube for four months, and already, she has 2,800,000 views!
Watch this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yavx9yxTrsw
There are references to her all over the internet. There are blog entry after blog entry of people who love her madly, and of people who hate her with a passion. What is it about this girl that inspires such intense emotion in people? Personally, I think she's adorable; nonsensical and bizarre, but still adorable.
What's your impression?

Well, I think that she's annoying and pretentious... and I hate her hair... I hate when people get styles where they have to tilt their heads a certain way constantly to keep it in place. But, she's pretty. That's all I can really say for her, and I'm not sure why her youtube even matters to people.

Thanks for the responses, but that's not really what I'm looking for. I'm seeking an explanation of what it is about her that's inspired such intense devotion in some, and such burning hatred in others. I mean, this girl is apparently a big deal. If you google "Boxxy," you get 299,000 hits! That's high-profile! Just to give you a point of comparison, googling "PM Dawn" gets 258,000 hits.

I must say, the thing that drew me in was the fact that she wears black against a black backdrop. It's almost like she is a disembodied head, like in a puppet show. Also, the extreme close-up sort of reminds me of Big Brother, except she's far less malevolent, and much perkier.

well, i'm assuming she probably got picked up by 4chan. that's how everything gets popular. and usually that's all it takes, whether the content is captivating or relevant is almost irrelevant. it just has to be quirky enough to get a couple peoples attention.
but, this video does have a nearly perfect storm thing happening...cute, chick, saying dumb stuff or saying it like she's on meth,

Well, I can see why those qualities could get someone to pass on the video, like I did to this forum, but the question remains... why do people love her/hate her so much? "Chocolate Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwTZ2xpQwpA&feature=PlayList&p=6BCAE077AD5715DF&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=7),"
also picked up by 4chan, generated millions upon millions of views, too, but people would generally watch it and say, "I liked it" or "I didn't like it". Boxxy, however, created devotees who actually went so far as to make gallerys of Boxxy vidcaps and verbal declarations of love, and she also created people who hated her (or maybe hated her fans) enough to cyber-attack her, and stalked her until she chose to curtail her internet activities.

She's sort of extreme herself, in a way that is more sensational for today, and it draws extreme attention. Her antics and appearance are very now and speak to today's people, she's a cute girl, she's "emo" in appearance (and I barely grasp what that means), and she won't stop muppeting about-- all of which scream, "look at me!", which I'm sure is all very gratifying to her young ego and all very time-consuming to the mindlessly underentertained and unstimulated looking for a new fixation or battle via internet to provide some meaning to their sad, pointless lives ... (sigh) It's a formula for success, or "success", or just suc.

I've been thinking about it, and I think my take is thus:
Some people love Boxxy just because they are attracted to her. However, there are people (like me) who love her for a different reason. Boxxy is like a breath of fresh air to the people who are weary of the same dark cynicism, sarcasm and self-aware irony that has plagued the internet (and American youth culture) for years. It seems that nothing can be cute and guileless anymore without someone on the internet making their best efforts to corrupt it.
Regardless of whether Boxxy is a real person or a contrived character, Her wide-eyed wonder and unrestrained enthusiasm portray an openness of heart that most of us had at one time, and most of us miss. Etherspin mentioned a learning disability-- I don't think that Boxxy has any kind of developmental disorder (at least, not one that will handicap her), but many people with disorders that stunt mental growth [such as Down's Syndrome] are able to hold on to that earnestness and innocence for their whole lives.
The Boxxy lovers are likely to describe Mr. Rogers as the kindest, most gentle man on television.
The people who hate her represent the very thing the Boxxy lovers don't want any more of. The Boxxy haters are the champions of the "it's so bad it's good" mindset, where ironic value supercedes true value. Their hearts are closed; they are so afraid of showing genuine emotion that they generally hide it all behind a mask of derision and indifference. This is a hipster. When they do show genuine emotion, they are ill-equipped to handle it, and they are consumed by them. This is an emo... and trust me, nobody likes an emo. These people hate Boxxy, because she shows them that there is another way.
The Boxxy haters are likely to describe Mr. Rogers as a probable child molester.
In response to Wendy: I think she needs to take a break with the eyeliner, unless she thinks she's Queen Hatshepsut, or something.

Whatever. I think that people that buy into her are obviously unable to discern the genuine from the false. And, have a love of contrived youthful innocence... but then again, I AM cynical, and liken the love of contrived innocence to that of an appreciation for Lolita.
If easy-going optimism and cheer is what you're after, try exhibiting some yourself first before condemning those of us still with eyes to see. It'll be easier to take you seriously and come around to your way of thinking, or at least be able to share in a *genuine* appreciation for something.
I am only growing more passionate in my dislike for her as I witness a love for her grow. I am totally being influenced by the power of others emotions. In truth, in my natural state, I care very little for the issue. I have been provoked! It's your fault, I tell ya. Achoo.

And everything that we attempted to do in the vein of the "good old days" was lambasted as being inside humor or not funny, even to the point that the people from the "good old days" themselves were lambasted. You seem to think that I don't know the kind of stuff that was posted back in the day. I do; it's all archived. I've read reams of pages of it, and I can tell you right now that the "old" forum was not built on horsedogs. It was built on people showing up and bringing something to share, rather than sitting back and expecting other people to entertain them.
And please refrain from the dramatics. Nobody "lambasted" anybody for that horsedog thing. What, do you blame me for saying I didn't think it was funny? Do you expect your inside jokes to be funny to people who are not on the inside? And let's be honest here; y'all didn't stop talking about that horsedog business to accommodate me, and I certainly didn't make you stop. You stopped because it got played out, like most inside jokes do. Besides, if you had wanted everyone to laugh, the people here and me could have pulled together to come up with a new joke that everyone could laugh at.
Note how few of them are left and how rarely those that are post. This place is now what you guys have made it. Even the owner practically never comes around anymore.Hey... whatever makes you feel better, Coz.
In discussion forums, people come and people go. Most of the people who go, simply forget to keep coming. Take your own forum, for example. I like it, and I didn't stop coming for any particular reason; I just forgot to visit.
Of course, some people did leave for a reason. I can relate to that. I stopped coming here for more than a year. However, it wasn't about the new people; it wasn't about the old stalwarts, either. It was about this place having the same old thing day after day after day. I did my best to do something about that: when I didn't have anything to talk about, I posted links of interest to give people something to do, in the hopes that someone would get a clue and participate in the show & tell. When I did have something to talk about, nobody ever wanted to participate, unless I stooped to trolling them. I was getting no help. Wendy is a refugee from a forum where the same thing happened; she was the only person who put forth any effort. For as long as I can remember, not enough people want to take the initiative to add content or interest here; they'd rather be passive members and just wait for other people to entertain them. A forum is like a community playhouse, not a movie theatre. I got sick of all of my honest effort seeming like it was being tossed into a bottomless pit. And I left. If people hadn't worked my last nerve asking me when I was going to come back and start posting again, I might have stayed gone for good. Of course, if you mean what you say, maybe you believe that would have been a good thing...
Me, I go elsewhere for fun these days. I come here out of dedication to my position as an admin. This place is now more work than entertainment. :tiphat:Man... do what you wanna do.

As far as when this place was good or bad or whatever... Only being able to speak from personal experience, the place was at its height when it seemed to be in an air of love and family, which seems absent now, and I'm not sure if that's my fault or what. I do miss it, though. Sometimes I feel like we're suddenly all strangers. Again, that's just coming from my own personal spot... I know I can't speak for everyone there.

Not you. Never you. You were always down for the fun, even if you didn't understand it. Half of the fun was not understanding it, and letting it be whatever it was. Bootay. Horsedogs. Stoppy Stop. S.A.U.S.A.G.E. The Astral Plane. We used to have entire threads where nobody knew what the hell was going on, and nobody cared. We all just rolled with it. Even Elizabeth, who was our rolling matron of conscience, would add to the humor as she gently pooh-poohed it.
Then the police took over.
I think the beginning of the end was when Deity and Tybris hooked-up. Suddenly a whole bunch of things that used to be fun or funny weren't allowed to be fun or funny anymore. Then, it just increased as more and more people got older and found more and more things to be pissed about. Now, nothing is funny unless we import it. It's just fukkin sad.

I don't mean "grew up". I just mean, just like Be, we've all had lives to live during the last decade. Things like web forums, tend to fall by the wayside, and friendships along with them, sadly - and I'm not speaking for anyone but myself. I'm not even addressing the "things changed here" issue, Coz nailed it, and I'm as much to blame as anyone for killing the fun - but I have made dear, dear friends here too, which is why I keep coming back. to you all.

Who are Deity and Tybris anyhow? I only see their stuff when I chase a slurp spider into an archive.
S.A.U.S.A.G.E. sounds like fun.
It seems like I'll always check in, unless a hurricane knocks out my power/dsl. I don't worry about how-it-will-all-end, all things come to an end. I'm just totally enjoying the ride.
After all, WE ARE the Center Of The Universe. Call me delusional (thank you very much), but I honestly do believe that. The Infinite Universe and all Existence has a core, and for some reason, we are, on this very forum, at the center of it. Why do I think and feel this? Who knows? Who gives a cracker's ass? I just do and I like it and I have no problem being all alone with this feeling.
So as long as there is movement in any thread, like Michael Jackson, I'll be there.
Oh, but I won't be in the chat Friday. I'll be at the Twiztid show, bitches.

I'm not going to be crotchety and wish for the "good old days," but I do admit that I would have liked to be a member of the forum back when Be was posting regularly. By the time I came around, he had already stopped posting, and let's face it: one of the things that kept people coming back to the PM Dawn forum was the unique opportunity to communicate directly with PM Dawn. Most of the fan forums I've been to are just places where one guy says "I like so-and-so," and the next guy says "Yeah, me too," and then infrequently, the author/musician/actor will post and say "Hay guys thx for poasting". Although I can't say this with the benefit of first-hand experience, I can guess that there was something really special about this place when Be was posting all the time, because Be was posting all the time.

Well, if you remember, Deity was the forum flirt. Sort of like Wendy on flirt steroids. As soon as she and Tybris hooked-up (even before they moved in together) he started deflecting anything of that manner directed at her and made damm sure that she stopped her flirting ways. If you had a conversation with her he had to be involved.

There never was ANY proliferation of bootay pics, which was what made it so funny. The guys would all clamor for them and the girls would always deny them. We would pretend to be frustrated and the girls would feed that frustration. There never was ANY proliferation of bootay pics, which was what made it so funny.
I was being facetious. The chicks here don't like to post pictures of their butts on the internet, the uptight prudes.
The guys would all clamor for them and the girls would always deny them. We would pretend to be frustrated and the girls would feed that frustration. I think that Deity even started a thread called "Deity's Sweet Bootay" or something like that, which of course contained nothing of the sort. THAT'S WHAT MADE IT FUNNY!
Oh, you didn't see the nude photos in that thread? Well maybe you should upgrade your PM Dawn forum membership, and then you will be able to view all censored and redacted material. I got my upgrade from a PBS benefit package, because I donated a gift of $15 or more to pubic television.

Well, if you remember, Deity was the forum flirt. Sort of like Wendy on flirt steroids.
They have those?
As soon as she and Tybris hooked-up (even before they moved in together) he started deflecting anything of that manner directed at her and made damm sure that she stopped her flirting ways. If you had a conversation with her he had to be involved
Yeah, that relationship is gonna' last.
